July 1, 2013 — Noon today marked the end of candidate filing for South Carolina State Senate District 42. State Representative Wendell Gilliard, who was once considered a front-runner for the vacancy officially endorsed fellow Democrat Marlon Kimpson. Kimpson, a Charleston attorney, announced his candidacy last week.
“Marlon Kimpson has spent his career fighting to protect working people who have been wronged by big corporations. He stood up for families and retirees who have been scammed by fraud and for kids whose civil rights were violated by police and school officials at Stratford High School,” Gilliard said.
“I need a public servant in Columbia fighting with me for better public schools, for Medicaid expansion and against the extremist Republican agenda. This community needs Marlon Kimpson in the State Senate,” Gilliard added.
Kimpson said he was honored to have Gilliard’s support. “Representative Gilliard is a highly respected leader and an outstanding public servant. I look forward to campaigning with him and then serving with him in the general assembly,” Kimpson said.
The Democratic Primary is August 13, 2013 and the General Election is scheduled for October 1, 2013.
