Charleston, South Carolina—State Senator Marlon Kimpson (D-Charleston) pre-filed the following legislative bills yesterday aimed at reducing the number of illegal guns, ban assault weapons, strengthen background checks, and implement a gun registration system so tracking can be made easier in South Carolina. “The time has come for us as a state to address a very important issue that continues to impact our communities across South Carolina and that is gun control,” said Kimpson. “We cannot afford another tragedy to happen before we take the needed and necessary steps to address the issue,” said Kimpson.
Kimpson also pre-filed legislation that would raise the minimum wage in South Carolina. Under his bill, the wage would increase to $8.75 per hour beginning in 2017 to $15 per hour by 2020. “This legislation is about ensuring that all South Carolinians are participating in the economic prosperity of our state. Right now the rich are getting richer while the working class wages have remained stagnant,” said Kimpson.
