Let me assure the citizens interested in the survival of South Carolina State University, we will vigorously fight any bill or proviso to take away funding from the university and/or suspend operations. In fact, we need to do the opposite —and that is, adequately fund the university so that it can compete with other state schools for the best and brightest students.
There was a 3 to 1 vote taken in the House Ways and Means Committee on the proviso today. Understand that sub-committees are appointed by the majority party. In this case, the Republican party controls the sub-committees in the House and Senate. The proviso will now go to the full committee of the House Ways and Means for consideration. Often times, ridiculous pieces of legislation are passed in sub-committee and die in full committee. While I’m not underestimating what can be passed in the House (after all, a bill to nullify the Affordable Care Act in SC passed the House last year), I can assure you that if it gets to the Senate, I will joined by a number of my colleagues in an effort to stop it (we killed the nullification of the ACA bill last year).
