Labor Council Endorses Kimpson in Special Election
Charleston, SC – At its July 9 meeting, the Charleston Central Labor Council voted to endorse Marlon Kimpson in the primary race for State Senate Dist. 42.
“Kimpson’s long been a friend of organized labor, which means he’s a friend of all working people,” CLC president Erin McKee says. “He understands the importance of good jobs with good benefits to a community.”
The recommendation now goes to the executive committee of the South Carolina AFL-CIO, which will vote by special meeting on whether to complete the endorsement.
The Democratic candidate welcomes the support. “I am deeply humbled to be endorsed by the coalition for working men and women in Charleston County,” Kimpson says. “Many in the legislature want to stifle the voices of working people in this state by not allowing them to organize or join unions. I will fight to protect working men and women and their families.”
Kimpson spoke at the meeting prior to CLC’s vote to endorse. “I have been a friend of organized labor since before I practiced law,” he told council members. “I can win this election if I have your support.”
CLC usually refrains from candidate endorsement in a primary election stage, but chose to make exception for this special election. “We know he’ll fight to bring jobs and justice to the district,” McKee says.
