SC Declared Federal Disaster Area

Dear Friends,

I hope this note finds you and your family safe and sound.

The weather conditions for last several days have had a tremendous impact on South Carolina’s highways, roads, and bridges. Sunshine and weather clearing is expected today, but please heed all warnings before deciding whether to drive. Click the following link from the SCDOT so that you can get the most current information available: http://www.scdot.org/getting/StormResources.aspx

I’ve indicated numerous times on social media that is very important to document any and all damage to your home and personal property. This will be vitally important when you prepare to file a claim with your homeowners and/or flood insurance companies. Also as you may know, President Obama declared South Carolina a disaster area. Governor Haley has asked for federal assistance for Berkeley, Charleston, Clarendon, Dorchester, Georgetown, Horry, Lexington, Orangeburg, Richland, Sumter, and Williamsburg counties, and we are expecting her to expand this request to the other affected counties.

I’m informed that residents and business owners who suffered losses in the designated counties can begin applying for assistance Tuesday by registering online at DisasterAssistance.gov or by calling 1-800-621-3362 or 1-800-462-7585 for the hearing and speech impaired.

Finally, if you need any assistance, please do not hesitate my Senate office at 803-212-6056.

Sincerely,

Senator Marlon Kimpson

Transportation Committee Report

On February 18th, the Transportation Committee heard from the SCDOT that the true cost of meeting the transportation needs of this state exceeds $1.47 billion per year. The Governor’s proposal for an increase in the gasoline tax followed by a tax cut for the wealthy will yield less than $400 million per year. Senator Kimpson believes the Governor’s plan is a plan to fail. The critical issue that needs to be determined over the course of the next few months is as his colleague Sen. Ray Cleary (R-Georgetown) stated, whether we are “going to actually fund the current and future needs of our state or are we going to place a band-aid on the issue…”. Senator Kimpson has been appointed to the Senate Transportation Committee and is interested in your thoughts. Read more ›
