It is a great privilege to acknowledge Mrs. Julie Mae Simmons who was presented the 2014 Harold Koon Award by Mayor Joseph P. Riley last evening. Mayor Riley recognized Mrs. Simmons during his State of The City Address to a crowd of over 100 people which packed Charleston City Hall. Mrs. Simmons is the President of the Joseph Floyd Manor Community Association and received the award because of her outstanding volunteer services in the City of Charleston. Mrs. Simmons met with me and other community leaders just a few weeks ago as I hosted the first District 42 Neighborhood Presidents meeting. I am extremely proud of her and wanted to share this good news with the citizens of District 42.
About the Harold Koon Award

He was an indomitable volunteer for the city of Charleston and his neighborhood. His leadership and ability to create a sense of pride for his neighbors and neighborhood was outstanding. This award was established to perpetuate the energy, dedication and selflessness of his example. Sixteen citizens of Charleston have received this award.
